Spoke 3 - Who we are

Spoke 3, Tourism and Culture Industry, is coordinated by the University of Insubria and sees the collaboration between universities, research centers and organizations.

The Spoke 3 research and innovation program aims at economic, social and territorial development through targeted actions. The sustainability of the production system, the digitization of small and medium-sized enterprises and the enhancement of cultural heritage are the cornerstones on which the project is based.

The main areas of specialization of the research and innovation program are: the study of ecosystems of culture and knowledge, the digitization of the tourism industry and the protection and enhancement of cultural and environmental heritage.

The themes

In terms of lines of research and innovation, Spoke 3 has identified several strands including:

  • Fashion Design, Management and Sustainability: how design in the fashion industry can be successfully managed, regulated and improved to contribute to environmental sustainability;

 

  • Intersection between Cultural Heritage and Natural Conservation (Museums, Archaeological and Historical Places, Landscape): the concept of heritage that goes far beyond the traditional notion of old buildings and historic sites;

 

  • Multimedia narratives and digital creativity: the topics concern digital narratives that are immersed in a new media environment that maintains a close relationship with the construction and understanding of contemporary society;                                                                                                                                                                          
  • Digital tourism and destination management: the focus is on the impact of applying technologies, such as travel aggregators, online travel agencies, social media applications, metasearch engines and new ways to manage them in order to accelerate the growth of tourism;                                               
  • Lifestyles, Tourism and Marketing: themes that embrace interdisciplinary topics of fashion, marketing, events, tourism, retailing and food with a focus on consumer lifestyles.

The Spoke 3 vision places emphasis on human creativity which is central to innovation in the tourism industry as well as the cultural industry. The focus is on those industries that find their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent, which have the potential for job and wealth creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

The development of the territory and of the local culture is usually linked to historical, artistic and architectural factors, as well as to its natural beauties; these are elements that play a fundamental role within the project and which will contribute to initiating a paradigm shift in economic and social terms.

Mission

The Insubric territory is characterized by its rich and ancient history, with architectural and monumental beauties that join the natural ones, as well as by an industrial development, based on textiles and silk, which has characterized the landscape and the culture of the places in a significantly.

Today the culture of tourism regains this industrial dimension, an integral part of the territory's identity, of its social capital and - at the same time - the driving force behind the development of the tourism industry itself, which is enriched year after year with new cultural perspectives.

Sustainable tourism and enhancement of industrial heritage intersect on several levels in a dimension that aims at sustainability and digitalization. The project's mission is therefore to develop the culture of the territories, linking them to historical, artistic and architectural factors, to their natural beauties, as well as to other aspects that are part of the industrial fabric and which are linked to the concept of creativity, to encourage a entrepreneurial culture devoted to sustainability.

Objectives

The project developed by Spoke 3 is aimed at increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of ecosystem companies through the implementation of specific innovation and digitization processes for the territory.

The collaboration between universities, research centers and companies has the objective of identifying new topics on which to direct and develop industrial research; the definition of a strategy is preparatory in order to valorise the research results and favor their implementation.

Finally, the use of specialized researchers will make it possible to trigger a virtuous circle within which businesses and private citizens will be able to find a place in order to participate in the development of a new economy.
