On April 18, 2023, Ph.D candidate Irene Preet Bhela, affiliated with Professor Tracey Pirali's laboratory, presented a seminar at the Department of Drug Sciences on Store-Operated Calcium Entry (SOCE).    SOCE is a complex mechanism based on two key proteins, STIM and Orai, which contribute to the regulation of calcium homeostasis.  Being crucial for numerous cellular functions such as inflammation, platelet activation, and muscle contraction, an alteration in this mechanism is linked to various pathologies.  Among these, the UPO laboratory is particularly active in researching both ultra-rare diseases, such as tubular aggregate myopathy (TAM) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA).    During this seminar, Dr. Bhela presented the chemical-pharmaceutical contirbution in the design and synthesis of negative modulators of SOCE which led to the identification of a preclinical candidate, in collaboration with the start-up Chemlcare, and prodrugs based on its structure of the latter.    She then discussed the fortuitous discovery of a promising hit compound with dual inhibitory activity on dihydrooratate dehydrogenase- involved in pyrimidine byosinthesis - and SOCE, as a potential therapeutic approach for treating autoimmune pathologies.           

Spoke 4 of the NODES ecosystem presents the opportunities of the "cascade calls" for the mountain territory Yesterday, an event was held at the headquarters of the University of Valle d'Aosta in Saint Christophe, presenting the funding calls for the "NODES - Nord Ovest Digitale e Sostenibile" project and the application process, with a focus on Spoke 4 - Digital and Sustainable Mountain. After the greetings from Mariagrazia Monaci, Rector of the University of Valle d'Aosta, Chiara Ferroni, the General Director of HUB NODES, explained the organization and functioning of the project. Subsequently, the scientific coordinators of Spoke 4, including Marco Alderighi (project manager Spoke 4, University of Valle d'Aosta), Francesco Laio (Spoke 4 manager, Polytechnic University of Turin), and Laura Scomparin (Spoke 4 manager - University of Turin), along with Davide Poggi (innovation booster - Polytechnic University of Turin) and Alessandra Quarta (competence booster - University of Turin) provided insights. Roberto Strocco (project and territorial development manager, Unioncamere Piemonte) explained the functionalities of the platform for participating in the calls at webtelemaco.infocamere.it.

All the funding opportunities for area businesses and the research community to support a green future. On April 13, 2023, the event "TECH FOR GOOD. Innovation in Green Technologies" in which the University of Turin presented the themes and funding opportunities of Spoke 2 - Green Technologies and Sustainable Industry.   Speakers at the meeting were: Cristina Prandi - UniTO Vice-Rector and Spoke 2 Coordinator, Edoardo Braccio - Spoke 2 Project Manager, Micol Crostelli - Unioncamere Piemonte, and Chiara Ferroni - NODES Director General; who provided a detailed overview of the activities of the NODES hub and Spoke 2, the contents of the cascading calls, POCs, training opportunities, as well as how the enrollment platform works. Following this, Professors Enrico Boccaleri, Mauro Fasano, Debora Fino, and Federico Forneris, moderated by Marco Zanetti, expounded in a panel on the specific issues of each cascading call, leaving room for questions from event participants: companies, faculty, researchers, and students.

UNISG ospita l’evento che lancia i bandi per sostenere l’innovazione delle imprese dell’agroindustria secondaria L’Università di Scienze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo ha ospitato l’evento di lancio del programma di finanziamento per le imprese della filiera di origine animale e vegetale. Nel programma sono inclusi bandi a cascata, dottorati di ricerca in ottica industriale e iniziative di sostegno per l'innovazione e il trasferimento tecnologico della ricerca.    All’incontro erano presenti la responsabile per la Ricerca e l’Innovazione dell’hub NODES Raffaella Di Nardo, la responsabile scientifica dello spoke tematico sull’agroindustria secondaria e del relativo programma di bandi a cascata Luisa Torri, Dario Vallauri del polo AGRIFOOD – MIAC Scpa e Roberto Strocco di Unioncamere Piemonte.   Il programma di bandi a cascata legato allo Spoke 7 destina 4,6 milioni di euro a imprese del settore agroalimentare – in particolare a PMI e start-up del territorio interessato dal progetto e del Mezzogiorno, anche in collaborazione con le grandi imprese – per sostenere investimenti in innovazione tecnologica e sostenibilità alimentare. Tali aree sono infatti di fondamentale importanza per rafforzare e rendere più competitivo il tessuto imprenditoriale, contribuendo quindi a far crescere l’occupazione attraverso la valorizzazione del territorio e delle comunità produttive locali.   Luisa Torri ha spiegato che “le tematiche su cui potranno essere sviluppate le proposte progettuali da presentare riguardano: produzioni alimentari sicure, salutari e di alta qualità (healthy food), rese sostenibili grazie all'applicazione di principi dell’economia circolare (green food) e sistemi intelligenti, nuovi processi e strumenti per la trasformazione alimentare sostenuti dai nuovi paradigmi dell'industria 4.0 e 5.0 (smart food)”.    I bandi a cascata per le imprese vedono una collaborazione istituzionale con Unioncamere Piemonte volta ad aumentare la competitività delle imprese e a supportare la gestione ottimale dei bandi.    I 4,6 milioni di euro di fondi destinati ai bandi per le imprese del solo settore agroalimentare secondario si dividono in iniziative per sostenere progetti di ricerca industriale e sviluppo sperimentale, l’accesso a servizi di innovazione nell'ambito del settore in cui operano le imprese e progetti di ricerca industriale e sviluppo sperimentale per le regioni del Mezzogiorno. A questi finanziamenti si aggiungono oltre 800 mila euro di fondi per sostenere progetti di “Proof of Concept” (PoC) ad alto impatto sociale ed economico finalizzati a costruire nuove realtà imprenditoriali.       

The international event that will involve 40 students for three days of training and in-depth study of the territory is just around the corner. The Spring Food School (SFS) will be held from 12 to 14 April in Verbania, which is scientifically based on the work carried out within the "Food, Place and Wellbeing" project conducted by Oxford Brookes University (UK), the University of Insubria (IT) and Hertfordshire University (UK). An international project that sees the involvement of Italian researchers belonging to the University of Eastern Piedmont (IT) and the University of Genoa (IT). The course, structured over three days, was born from the strong desire to develop a training course that aims to offer participants adequate methodological and interpretative tools aimed at understanding the relationship between food festivals, well-being and cultural heritage. The SFS sees the combination of training activities and initiatives aimed at understanding and deepening the territory. The initiative will be very intense as the students will be involved in the creation of a final project work which will be presented at the final SpringSchool event (Geonight). Up to 40 Italian and foreign students will be able to take part in the SFS, some of whom will be able to enjoy scholarships consisting of free hospitality (B&B in shared room) in Verbania from 12 to 14 April.

Durante la conferenza stampa dello scorso 31 marzo, presso il Castello del Valentino, l'Ecosistema NODES - Nord Ovest Digitale e Sostenibile si è presentato al territorio.   Erano presenti il Presidente del consorzio NODES e Rettore del Politecnico di Torino Guido Saracco, il Direttore Generale per il coordinamento e lo sviluppo della ricerca del MUR Fabrizio Cobis, l’Assessore al Bilancio, Finanze, Programmazione economico-finanziaria, Patrimonio, Sviluppo delle attività produttive e delle piccole e medie imprese di Regione Piemonte Andrea Tronzano e il Segretario Generale di Unioncamere Piemonte Paolo Bertolino.    NODES è uno degli 11 Ecosistemi dell'innovazione individuati dal Ministero dell'Università nell'ambito del Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) per supportare la crescita sostenibile e inclusiva dei territori di riferimento in quella che viene identificata come doppia transizione (digitale ed ecologica). Saranno 110 i milioni di euro che porteranno ricadute sul territorio di Piemonte, Valle d'Aosta e sulle province più occidentali della Lombardia (Como, Varese e Pavia). 15 milioni di euro saranno dedicati anche ad attività di ricerca e bandi a cascata a favore delle regioni del Sud del Paese.   OBIETTIVI L’obiettivo ambizioso del progetto, che si concluderà in tre anni, è la creazione di filiere di ricerca e industriali in sette ambiti legati alla vocazione imprenditoriale del nostro territorio: Industria 4.0 per la mobilità sostenibile e l’aerospazio, Sostenibilità industriale e green technologies, Industria del turismo e cultura, Montagna digitale e sostenibile, Industria della Salute e silver economy, Agroindustria primaria e secondaria. Il progetto si propone di sostenere l’innovazione su traiettorie tecnologiche a elevato potenziale per sviluppare da un lato nuovi prodotti e processi nelle PMI esistenti, stimolando processi di valorizzazione della ricerca e di trasferimento tecnologico e aumentandone la competitività anche a livello internazionale e dall’altro di favorire la nascita di start-up e spin-off «Deep Tech» negli ambiti individuati, attraendo risorse economiche aggiuntive da fondi di Venture Capital.   LA ROADMAP Per attuare questa collaborazione, si studieranno percorsi e strumenti di innovazione collaborativi tra start-up, PMI, grandi imprese e mondo della ricerca, che siano scalabili e replicabili anche a PNRR concluso. Il progetto NODES è iniziato il 1° ottobre 2022 con l’avvio delle attività di ricerca e di progettazione delle azioni di trasferimento tecnologico, accelerazione e formazione per le imprese e nuovi talenti. Da subito sono partiti i lavori di definizione delle traiettorie di sviluppo industriale sui sette ambiti sulle quali l’Ecosistema intende stimolare e supportare percorsi di innovazione in grado di aumentare la competitività del territorio. Un importante contributo nella definizione è già stato raccolto dal coinvolgimento degli stakeholder territoriali rappresentati dell’industria, finanza privata, pubblica amministrazione locale e società civile.   Guarda il servizio del TGRegione - Piemonte La conferenza stampa è stata anche l'occasione per presentare gli strumenti di finanziamento e lanciare le attività che verranno realizzate per il territorio su ciascuno dei sette ambiti del progetto.  OPPORTUNITA' DAI BANDI Sono 35.5 milioni di euro i primi fondi dedicati ai bandi a cascata per le imprese per sostenere le loro attività di ricerca e innovazione: • 25.3 milioni di euro sono i fondi per progetti di ricerca e sviluppo, presentati dalle imprese – anche in collaborazione – del territorio Nord-Ovest e in parte dalle imprese del Mezzogiorno. • 10.2 milioni di euro i fondi per facilitare accesso delle start-up e PMI a servizi di supporto rivolti a promuovere investimenti strategici in attività di innovazione di prodotti, servizi e/o processi e ad accelerare lo sviluppo delle imprese innovative.   I bandi a cascata per le imprese saranno emanati dagli Spoke, gli Atenei pubblici del territorio di NODES, con una collaborazione istituzionale con Unioncamere Piemonte rivolta ad aumentare la competitività delle imprese. In virtù della piattaforma a livello nazionale webtelemaco.infocamere.it utilizzata dal mondo delle imprese, Unioncamere Piemonte supporterà la gestione ottimale dei bandi. A questi fondi si aggiungono 5.8 milioni di euro per sostenere progetti di “Proof of Concept” (PoC) proposti da ricercatori che intendono valorizzare i risultati della propria ricerca verso lo sfruttamento commerciale, favorendone il trasferimento alle imprese e la costituzione di nuove realtà imprenditoriali e più di 2 milioni di euro per formare nuovi talenti attraverso il Dottorato di ricerca in ottica «industriale» con percorsi di inserimento nel mondo produttivo. La Direttrice Generale di NODES, Chiara L. G. Ferroni ha chiarito come questi bandi potranno innescare un effetto leva che sia in grado di ampliare il raggio d’azione del PNRR, generando nuove opportunità di finanziamento e moltiplicando gli investimenti. NODES dà via il 12 aprile a Pollenzo ai bandi a cascata dello Spoke 7 Stimolare la competitività nelle aziende del settore agroalimentare è solo uno degli obiettivi che si propone lo Spoke 7, ma è anche il principale scopo che il progetto ha nei confronti delle aziende. Per questo motivo, l’Ecosistema NODES ha previsto una serie di iniziative che coinvolgeranno in prima linea il tessuto produttivo dell’area geografica interessata, prima fra tutte i bandi a cascata per le imprese. L’evento sarà l’occasione per presentare tutte le opportunità che lo Spoke 7 dell’Ecosistema dell’Innovazione NODES, destinerà nei prossimi mesi alle imprese della trasformazione alimentare di Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta e delle province di Pavia, Como e Varese. NODES and Proof of Concept (PoC) Academics: Funding for innovative green technologies. The NODES call for proposals intends to fund Proof of Concept (PoC) projects in order to support the development of innovative green technologies to foster their transfer to the business world, in support of sustainable industry. In particular, the Nodes Academic PoC call finances innovative projects developed by university research groups, which focus on solutions and technologies in line with NODES and Spoke 2 themes. The main objective is to increase the level of maturity of the technologies and knowledge developed in the University as this will reduce the technological and business risk in order to facilitate their subsequent commercial exploitation and generate a positive socio-economic impact on the ecosystem territory. This impact will be assessed in terms of an increase in Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Societal Readiness Level (SRL), the creation of prototypes or demonstrators and the foundation of academic spin-offs that base their activities on the technologies and ideas developed during the PoCs. The call, aimed at university researchers, foresees the Cascade Call opening on the 14th of April with activities starting in the autumn, for 14-month PoC projects.

Stakeholders Committee The first meeting of the Stakeholders Committee of Spoke 4 took place on Friday, February 17th, from 11:00 to 13:00. The Stakeholders Committee includes the scientific leaders of Spoke and the projects activated by it, researchers, and research centers involved, representatives of local administrations in Valle d'Aosta, major business representative organizations in the regions involved in the NODES ecosystem, and some references from the civil society of the regions where Spoke 4 operates. This meeting provided an opportunity to present the activities of Spoke 4 and the three Flagship Projects (SUMMER, SMART WEST, and INTERFACE) to all stakeholders. It aimed to gather reflections, suggestions, and indications from stakeholders to align all parties for the subsequent phases of Spoke 4's activities. Further meetings of the Stakeholders Committee are planned.

From vineyard management to wine production The challenges and opportunities that the Italian wine sector is facing due to ongoing climate change highlight the need for sustainable innovation. The sector is highly fragmented, with a large number of actors in the value chain. The VINO project will propose three pillars of sustainable innovation to address these challenges. These pillars include the development of data collection systems for grape transformation stages, the interpretation and analysis of data for the development of climate models, and the implementation of climate sensors for data collection.    The involvement and collaboration of wine sector operators and economic actors are crucial for the success of the project. The use of remote sensing systems, expertise in big data, and precision agriculture techniques can contribute to addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainably improving the competitiveness of the sector.    The project aims to test and develop a sustainable business model that can be replicated in other sectors of primary agro-industry. The University of Turin, the University of Sassari, ERSAF, and the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change will support the University of Pavia by providing researchers and professionals with multidisciplinary scientific and technological expertise. Agronomists, botanists, climatologists, biologists, and geologists will be connected in specific research modules where they can carry out the necessary activities to cover all project objectives with a multidisciplinary and integrated approach.

Spoke 6's flagship project FORMIDABILÆ The agro-industrial sector is undergoing a huge transformation due to globalization, the increasing global population, and climate change. This transformation requires significant investments in innovation, digitalization, and the development of new technologies.    Moreover, in the European Union, the transition towards a more circular economy is crucial to achieving the sustainability goals of the Green Deal, and agriculture is a critical sector in this transition. The flagship project FORMIDABILÆ consists of five research modules aimed at improving the sustainability, circularity, and resilience of the agro-livestock system. The primary objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in this sector. The research modules will focus on agricultural production, maize, livestock optimization, climate effects on herds, and the use of precision farming techniques.    The project involves a multidisciplinary team of engineers, agronomists, botanists, biologists, and animal scientists coordinated by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, along with the University of Pavia, the University of Turin, the University of Sassari, and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change. The project will promote targeted approaches to improve smart, resilient, circular, and diversified farming in the agro-livestock sector. This ensures food security and the socio-economic sustainability of dairy and dairy-based food chains in a 4.0 and farm-to-fork perspective.

Sustainability reporting and assessments: trends and data reliability On Wednesday 19th April, at 5.30 p.m., the Grugliasco Campus of the University of Turin will host a meeting to connect researchers and companies. The appointment is structured around a short 10-minute illustrative video entitled 'Reporting and Sustainability Assessments: Trends and Reliability of Data', given by Professors Laura Corazza from the Department of Management, and Alain Devalle from the Department of Economic-Social Sciences and Mathematical-Statistics. Non-financial reporting and sustainability data are becoming increasingly important both in terms of corporate communication and financial reporting. Indeed, sustainability reporting is aimed at all stakeholders from suppliers to investors. UK research is active in understanding the importance and potential of this tool, future trends and the importance of data collection in the fight against greenwashing. The initiative is promoted by the Butterfly Area, a strategic project of the university. Spoke 1, Aerospace and Sustainable Mobility with civil society representives April 16 marked the start of the work of the Stakeholder Committee, one of the management and steering bodies of Spoke 1 Aerospace and Sustainable Mobility. The committee, which met telematically, brought together associations, industrial and innovation districts and agencies, chambers of commerce, and local and central representatives to discuss the common strategy to be adopted in view of the now imminent launch of funding calls. The involvement of the area's many and diverse actors demonstrates Spoke 1's intention to work to ensure maximum impact and synergy between the project and other local development, innovation, digitization and sustainability initiatives. Scientific coordinator Giuseppe Scellato outlined the status of the project in its entirety, emphasizing NODES' commitment not only to collaborative research, training and technology transfer, but also to the development of entrepreneurship, a key issue in ensuring the competitiveness of the area.

School of Water Re-use The first international training school on the topic of water reuse, School of Water Re-use, will be established in Turin in 2022. The school intends to train staff of water utilities, companies, young researchers, young professionals, PhD students interested in deepening their knowledge and developing skills on the topic of water reuse. The aim is to offer participants an insight into new perspectives and solutions for the challenges that will be faced in this field. In particular, multidisciplinary knowledge related to the topic of Water Re-use will be acquired by crossing different fields of application. Not only training. On 19th April 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Aula De Filippi in Via Accademia Albertina 13 in Turin, the first meeting of the newly created Working Table on Water Re-use will be held. The Table was created to address with a multidisciplinary approach the issue of water reuse in view of the increasingly pressing water crisis and the entry of the Regulation (EU) 2020/741 on minimum requirements for water reuse. The aim of the meeting is to gather critical issues, interests, needs and present the expertise present. Finally, the Working Table proposes itself as an interlocutor to initiate collaborations, synergies, projects to face and fight the water crisis.
